The Orange Seed That Explained Everything

 

I have been tutoring international kids for several years now. It's a part of my life people are naturally curious about, and one question comes up more than any other: "How do you manage their syllabus? Is it harder or easier than what we studied?" For a long time, my answer was simple — "There isn't much difference." I said it because it felt true on the surface. They learn fractions, we learnt fractions. They learn photosynthesis, we learnt photosynthesis. Same subjects, same broad topics, same age groups. What difference could there really be?

But the question kept coming back, from different people, in different words, over the years. And repetition has a way of turning a throwaway answer into a real one. Somewhere along the way, I stopped brushing the question off and started actually sitting with it. Is there a difference? And if there is, where does it live? My usual reply became a little more thoughtful: "They're learning the same things we learnt, just in an easier and more practical way." That felt closer to the truth. But I still couldn't explain how. It was a feeling I had, not something I could point to.

Then, recently, I stumbled on an example that finally made it click — and it came from my own childhood, not from a classroom.

I have been a devotee of Lord Shiva for as long as I can remember. As a child, whenever something troubled me, I was told to share it with God, and He would take care of it.

When I was around eight, I accidentally swallowed the seed of an orange. I was terrified. I genuinely believed that seed would sprout inside me, grow into a sapling, and eventually kill me. So I did what I had always been taught to do — I prayed to Lord Shiva. Days passed, nothing happened to my body, and I quietly concluded that Lord Shiva had solved my problem.

Looking back now, two things stand out to me about that memory.

First, the idea that a seed grows into a tree was something I had learnt at school, and learnt well. I understood it clearly enough to be genuinely afraid that the same thing could happen inside my stomach. The concept had stuck.

Second, the concept of digestion had also been taught to me around that same age. But it clearly hadn't stuck in the same way. If it had, I would have known that the acids and enzymes in my stomach would break down that seed long before it ever got the chance to sprout. I hadn't actually understood digestion — I had only memorized it well enough to pass a test.

Same classroom. Same syllabus. Two concepts taught with equal weight. One I understood; one I merely learnt. That gap — between knowing something and understanding it — is, I now realize, exactly the difference I had been struggling to put into words.

This is where I finally found my answer to the question I'd been asked for years.

Here's a question from a 5th grade international math textbook:

A light year is the distance that light can travel in one year.

1 light year = 9,460,000,000,000 km.

(a) Express one light year in scientific notation.

(b) The average distance between Earth and the Sun is 1.496 × 10⁸ km. Is the distance between Earth and the Sun greater than, less than, or equal to one light year?

Notice what this question is actually doing. It's not just asking a child to memorize the rule for scientific notation and reproduce it. It hands them a real, almost unbelievable fact — that light travels this unimaginable distance in a single year — and then asks them to use the concept to make sense of something concrete: how does our own solar system's scale compare to that?

The child isn't just learning a rule. They're being placed inside a situation where the rule actually matters. They come away not just knowing how to convert a number into scientific notation, but why anyone would ever want to.

That, I think, is the real difference. It was never about the topics being different — it's about how deeply a child is made to sit with why something works, not just what the rule is.

This pattern shows up again and again in how international curricula are built. Kids are taught the rules, yes — but they're also walked through the reasoning behind them. They're taught why a rule exists, and because of that, they're able to genuinely respect it. At the same time, they're given the freedom — even encouraged — to question a rule when it stops making sense, or when circumstances change.

It's a small distinction with large consequences. A rule you understand is a rule you're more likely to follow, even when no one is watching. A rule you've only memorized is a rule you follow only until you find a way around it.

I sometimes wonder if this is part of why countries with this kind of education tend to have comparatively less corruption, and citizens who are more naturally law-abiding. Not because their people are inherently more disciplined, but because from the age of eight or nine, they were taught the why behind the rule — not just the rule itself.

I still remember the fear of that orange seed. I understood it, so I believed it. I wish someone had helped me understand digestion just as well — I might have saved myself a very anxious week. But more than that, that memory finally gave me the answer to a question I'd been asked, in one form or another, for years.
